How did you get started?
I wanted to do it for years [work in the industry] but there were no courses in the 1980's. I got my break as an extra working as a trainee Locations Manager. I went on to work as an Assistant Director working on "Educating Rita".
From here I continued to move up the ranks and worked as a 3rd Assistant Director on "Remington Steele". I worked as a 2nd Assistant which organises the Call Sheet which is basically the Who, What, Where, When, Why and How of the days activities.
I worked my way into Production Management where I am today and my latest projects include "The Jackal" and "Anna and the King".
What did you do before you got in to the film industry?
I have an Accountancy and Law background, which has been of enormous use to me on a day to day level organising tax incentives and 481 funds.
What are you working on right now?
I'm working on the "Magnificent Ambersons" a novel by Booth Tarkington that won the Pulitizer prize in 1918. We are using the original script from the 1940's version by Orson Welles.
Currently the movie is set for US TV release except it may have a theatrical run outside the States. There are no confirmed plans though.
What's an average day in your job like?
Up at 6:30 a.m. Breakfast on the set by 7:00 a.m. Finish at 8:00 p.m., emails at 10:00 p.m. and then bed. During the day I deal with the smooth running of operations involving the picture, the crew and clearing checks. I do all the hiring and firing in consultation with the other managers. All the deals are done by me!
What's the best thing about your job?
Best? You work like a gypsy and there is an end to each job in sight. This makes it very exciting and every job is different. There's never a chance to be bored. I immensely enjoy organising people. I really, really enjoy my job!
